Top of Heart

How a new approach to business saved my life, and could save yours too

Grant Muller

Description

**Business Book Awards 2024 Finalist**

Achievement almost killed him. Fulfillment saved him.

Grant Muller was nearly killing himself – quite literally. A desperate quest to get rich had made him a millionaire before the age of 30 but then taken him to the brink: homeless, living on drugs and hustle. If his lifestyle didn’t end him, one of the thugs he owed money to would surely do the job.

So when he finally got off the streets and got clean, he knew everything had to change. He reinvented himself, and along the way came to understand that real success in sales isn’t just about the hustle, or about being top of mind. It’s about the human connections you create.

In transforming his own life, he transformed his understanding of business. Today he earns his millions as a real estate agent, living and working with a ‘Top of Heart’ philosophy, the true source of authentic connection, fulfillment and success.

His remarkable story is a call to a new, more human approach to business that might just save YOUR life, too.

‘Real-world urgency… A must read.’ Robert Reffkin, Founder & CEO, Compass Real Estate

Reviews

…a book that upends formulaic get-rich-quick business models and the belief that professional interactions depend on calculated manipulation. Muller contends that success must center on forming authentic relationships, but this extraordinary book is about much more than professionalism; it is about how to live a rewarding life. Muller’s own story, detailing the steps that led to addiction and homelessness, where he relinquished every semblance of integrity, supports his conviction. His evident honesty makes the foundation of his 180-degree change, which leads to exceptional professional success, totally credible. The book demonstrates that leading by feelings or ‘heartset’ can be transformational. Top of Heart includes several exercises where the reader can assess what feeling-driven business could mean for them…Muller’s transparency demonstrates how a different mindset can lead to life-altering change. Against the backdrop of how he lived in a self-made hell and achieved recovery through tremendous effort, the dramatic subtitle of the book is not an exaggeration…Essential reading for those about to start a career and veterans who have anchored themselves in script-driven deceptions. Constance Stadler – Readers’ Favorite 5-star review

Top of Heart is Grant Muller’s memoir. While he was successful early on in life, becoming a millionaire before the age of 30, his fortune quickly spiraled downward after he became a drug addict… It’s not easy for drug addicts to raise themselves above their dire circumstances. Grant Muller managed to do this with flying colors, which is why Top of Heart is such an inspirational book. His memoir is well-written and I loved it. In business, Muller found that the traditional top-of-mind strategies were not enough. A new, more human approach was necessary and he came up with a personal philosophy, which is simply brilliant. For those who are looking for a real-life inspirational story and those looking for a new humane way to conduct business, this is a recommended read. Tommy Wong – Readers’ Favorite 5-star review

Top Of Heart is Grant Muller’s incredible story of how a young boy from South Africa overcame early assimilation difficulties and drug addiction while creating a new strategy for hitting sales targets that will increase your bank balance… Top Of Heart… is the missing link between the successful salesman and his happy clientele that has been ignored for too long. (Muller) shows how much experience he gathered as he created his trend-defining approach. This book is a must-read for everyone in the business of sales. Grant’s dramatic life story and his “Top of Heart Worldview” that emerged from it, align powerfully with Compass’s top values – finding your place in the world (our mission), bouncing back from adversity with great passion, and the realization that we can’t succeed alone. This book reminds us of what we already know while also giving us a new way of implementing it. Top of Heart reminds us that the real keys to success in business are the relationships we nurture. Top of Heart is a work of art. It reads like watching a movie. Grant is as authentic, vulnerable, and real as he wishes us all to be in this life story with lessons powerful enough to save us from ourselves. It is time to quit marketing to strangers and it is time to start communicating with friends. It is time for us to take our insatiable appetite for what we don’t have and replace it with an insatiable appreciation for what we do have. Bless Grant for writing Top of Heart because every reader will be blessed by his words. Who would have thought to write a book that combines memoir, addiction, and a groundbreaking relationship-building model for business? Is that a “normal” business book formula? Probably not but Top of Heart works, in the way an unusual but delicious sandwich does – like Elvis’s favorite, peanut butter and banana sandwich. It works because to really understand WHY Grant’s Top of Heart model is so good and so necessary in business today, you need to get on the rollercoaster with him and experience his gripping life story. You need to know how he almost died, how Top of Heart was a direct result of his rebirth, and how it can create a rebirth for any of us in the business of building relationships. Am I saying Elvis would have loved this book? That’s for you to decide. In the meantime, I’m already experiencing success by applying Grant’s techniques and exercises to build more meaningful relationships with my clients and prospects! Top of Heart takes you on a messy introspection of the twists, tribulations and disasters life serves… and then shows you how finding motivation and purpose enables you to change your world for the better. Heart-rending read. Inspiring story. Stefan Swanepoel, New York Times and Wall Street Journal Best-Selling Author

As someone who has experienced traumatic events in life and found a way to move forward from personal challenges, I have great admiration for how Grant has done the same AND, on top of that, how he has taken those lessons and integrated them into his Top of Heart business model. The more I read and absorbed Grant’s explanation of his “Top of Heart worldview,” where relationships rule and drive transactions (versus the opposite), the more flashing light bulbs went off in my head, like – YES, THIS! Not to sound cliche, but this book is a “must read” for everyone in business and certainly for my real estate agent colleagues. Maya Vander, Real Estate Advisor, Netflix Top 10 “Selling Sunset”

Open. Honest. Torment transforming into triumph. If you prefer reading stories of people whose personal struggles have been minimal, have been great at what they do, and now want to show you how you too can be great… this is not the book for you. But if you want to read a captivating memoir, about a man who struggled with who he was, his personal addictions, then overcame those circumstances and uses that story to teach one of the most powerful business and sales lessons anyone will ever learn… then this is the book for you! The writing will grab you. The story will touch you. And the lessons will change you. Top of Heart by Grant Muller is a great book and I encourage every entrepreneur, salesperson, or business leader to read it! Jeff C. West, Award-Winning author of The Unexpected Tour Guide, and Bestselling Co-author of Said the Lady with the Blue Hair: 7 Rules for Success in Direct Sales Wrapped in a Wonderful Lesson for Life.

By courageously and candidly sharing his story, without holding back or censoring himself, Grant has chosen to be more than an author, more than a business thought leader – he has chosen to be an advocate. Ryan Hampton, addiction recovery advocate and bestselling author of American Fix and Unsettled.

I’ve been selling and team building with Avon for over 40 years. I’ve also side hustled and built teams in other sales organizations, but I am most known for my position in the top 5 teams in Avon for over two decades. My team numbers in the thousands and are spread across every state in the United States. In direct sales, genuine relationships are key. The relationships with customers and the relationships with team members. Reading Grant’s life-changing book Top of Heart reinforces and expands upon what I’ve been teaching and modeling for years. The book not only tells Grant’s story of triumph over his addictions and circumstances, but also gives a valuable framework and comprehensive structure to help us grow our numbers while being our most authentic selves along the way. My hope is that every direct seller — and every business owner! — will get Grant’s book and use it to grow their business. What a difference it would make for so many! Lisa M. Wilber, Avon Platinum Executive Leader, Award-Winning Co-author of Said the Lady with the Blue Hair: 7 Rules for Success in Direct Sales Wrapped in a Wonderful Lesson for Life

Like many of us, Grant Muller made some very poor choices in life. Top of Heart is his bare and compelling life story, revealing both his ups and downs, and the lessons he learned along the way. Randy Gage, author of Radical Rebirth
