The Creativity Paradox
Why organizations end up killing the innovation they crave (and what to do about it)
Abdelmoula El Hadi
Description
Why do bold ideas die inside well-managed companies, and how can leaders create the right conditions for them to thrive?
Paradox seems inescapable when it comes to organizational innovation, especially in high-stakes sectors. How do leaders navigate freedom and structure, risk and responsibility, collaboration and solitude, originality and incremental improvement to turn ideas into impact?
Drawing on 15 years of cross-industry experience, Abdelmoula El Hadi blends neuroscience, psychology, and real-world case studies from manufacturing, engineering and industrial technology. His IDEA Flow framework is a practical tool for navigating these paradoxes at the heart of creativity, allowing you to reliably spark creativity under pressure, nurture it in complex systems, and turn it into meaningful results.
This is not a book about flashy brainstorming or startup clichés. It’s a guide for leaders in high-stakes (and heavy) industries who need innovation that actually works in practice. With real-world stories, reflective questions and practical tools, it equips you to design creativity into your operating culture.
Abdelmoula El Hadi is an internationally recognized innovation leader and Head of Innovation at Knauf Insulation. With 15 years of cross-industry experience, he helps organizations spark creativity under constraints.
Endorsements
“Changing the nature and quality of conversations within a team fundamentally changes what becomes possible. The Creativity Paradox Offers insightful analyses and practices that will allow leaders to build psychological safety into everyday work, to move beyond superficial creativity memes into the actual work of solving tough problems.” Amy C. Edmondson, Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management, Harvard Business School. Author, Right Kind of Wrong: The Science of Failing Well (Atria, 2023).
“The Creativity Paradox gives language to a challenge many leaders quietly wrestle with: how to foster creativity inside systems built for control, reliability, and performance. Abdelmoula El Hadi offers a thoughtful and grounded perspective, showing that innovation doesn’t come from eliminating these tensions but from learning to work within them. With practical insight drawn from real organizational environments, this book helps leaders see more clearly where creativity actually lives—and how to create the conditions for it to take shape.” Dr. Marshall Goldsmith, Thinkers50 #1 Executive Coach and New York Times bestselling author of The Earned Life, Triggers, and What Got You Here Won’t Get You There
“Organizations exist to turn ideas into solutions customers value—yet too often, the people trying to make that happen feel the system pushing back at them. The Creativity Paradox offers a powerful lens for understanding why ideas stall inside even the best-run companies, and how leaders can design environments where those ideas don’t just emerge, but actually flow into impact.” Kaihan Krippendorff, Founder, Outthinker Strategy Network, Thinkers50 Ranked Thinker
“In a time when uncertainty is rising and speed is rewarded, this book meets the moment by arguing for something braver: the discernment to pause long enough for creativity to emerge, not from certainty, but from the tension that underlies the decisions that drive change and growth. An essential read for leaders who want innovation that is real, not performative, and the ability to turn pressure into progress.” Jeanette Bronée, Culture Strategist, Creator of Power-Pausing and Author of The Self-Care Mindset
“Organizations need two systems to thrive… one for today’s business and one for tomorrow’s business. The first sustains our current operations; it is the world of efficiency, optimization, and excellence. The second defines our next phase of business – and who we are to become in that phase; it is the world of imagination, creativity, and the grit to bring entirely new things to life. The problem is that, historically, these two systems have had difficulty coexisting… they rarely know how to work well together. This book tackles that problem. It offers both mental frameworks and tangible methods by which to meld these worlds and produce lasting impacts that go the distance. It is sure to move organizations from mindless activity to a rhythm of innovation.” Anthony Mills, Executive Director, Global Innovation Institute, Author of 7 books on Innovation and Future Shaping
“It is indeed a paradox that the stronger you grow, the more experienced and resourceful you become, the harder it is to stay agile and innovative. Big companies very often smother the culture, creativity and entrepreneurship required to develop new markets, products, processes or otherwise in prioritizations, well-meaning structures or policy alignments. Take it from Abdelmoula El Hadi, who with The Creativity Paradox has committed a great book based on first hand evidence about why it goes wrong and how to stay clear of the obstacles to nurture creativity and innovation.” Michael K. Rasmussen, Former CMO at the VELUX Group, CEO purpose@heart ApS
